Mr. President

Barack2A black man of Kenyan descent won decisively in a state with an African-American population of about two percent. He received more votes from women than his allegedly inevitable female opponent. It's easy to see why, and it's tremendously encouraging.

He spoke of unity, not division. He offered optimism, not defeat. He was, in a word,  presidential. You can question his experience, but there's no doubting Barack Obama's ability to lead. Imagine Hillbot saying this (convincingly):

"We are not a collection of red states and blue states. We are the United States of America!"

I got chills. If you didn't see his acceptance speech, watch it now. Robert F. Kennedy's spiritual heir emerged on Jan. 3, 2008, a truly historic night.

The Clinton machine will do its best to slime Obama in the coming days, but -- and I've been waiting to say this for years -- their time has passed. The race is clearly defined now, and I don't see voters opting for polarization over real change.

Republicans should be afraid -- very afraid. I wouldn't vote for him, but I was glad to see Huckabee prevail. It was a blow to the establishment and a victory for authenticity. The Anchorman must win in New Hampshire, but I don't see crusty Granite staters falling for his transparent act. Lose there, and Romney officially becomes an also-ran, no matter how much money he has left.

Obama vs. McCain -- it might actually happen. How refreshing would it be to choose between two truly decent candidates, neither of whom is grounded in the politics of petty partisanship? I typically resist such unguarded optimism, but, for one night at least, the future looks bright. I'll savor it while I can.
