Happy Birthday Gene Wilder

He's 74 today -- which should motivate me to finish my script, "Mall Across America." Wilder will play a billionaire megalomaniac bidding to construct a mall connecting New York to Los Angeles. Prince will play his nemesis, the Ted Turner to Wilder's Rupert Murdoch. The casting came to me in the shower years ago, and on that there will be no compromise. (I can be a naive optimist at times.)

I remember watching his Paul Masson commercials with my grandmother. I knew him only as the fat man who pitched wine on TV. No, she assured me, Welles was once a great star. I've long since been convinced, and this ad confirms his brillance, even when intoxicated. So sad that the man behind "Citizen Kane" ended his career shilling for a crappy California Chardonnay.
