Is Barack Obama the new John McCain? By challenging party orthodoxy -- and thus appealing to the majority middle -- Obama is emerging as a real threat to partisan hacks like Paul Krugman and Kos. How dare he undermine their influence.
Like their conservative counterparts, the so-called "purists" on the left prefer confrontation to consensus. They've approved the script and will not tolerate deviation, even if it enhances the dialogue.
Besides, getting even is more important than moving forward. So they flock to candidates like Clinton (or Romney, on the GOP side) knowing that neither has the courage to confront the status quo.
Think about who comprises the current status quo (including some well-known bloggers) and you'll see why the self-appointed gatekeepers of the respective bases are nervous about Obama and McCain.
