Tammy Faye Bakker appears to have lost her battle with lung cancer. Doctors have halted her treatment; she now weighs but 65 pounds and is barely able to swallow. 
It's a shame she'll be remembered for scandal. Tammy Faye transformed herself from punchline to inspiration, demonstrating a compassionate Christianity foreign to the Dobsons and Falwells of the world. Sure, she was garish and ridiculously fragile, but she was genuine, as anyone who saw "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" can attest. And she treated gays as people, not pariahs -- hell, she even tolerated Jim J. Bullock.
If only more Christians followed her example.
